Wooster bat removal tip of the month: Do mothballs help repel bats? - It's not known who started the ammonia/mothballs fad for getting rid of nuisance wildlife, but it is an age-old tradition that didn't work back then and doesn't work now. Nothing about the smell of ammonia or mothballs signals to a bat there may be danger. To a bat, the smell is unimportant, and even if it is potent, the bat may simply leave for a brief period of time and then return. Bats do have a strong sense of smell, but just because they don't like a smell doesn't mean they are willing to relocate their roost. What's more, it is incredibly difficult to fill a large space, like an attic, with fumes from mothballs or from ammonia. Eventually the smell will dissipate, and it often vanishes quickly enough that the fumes never reach a level that might encourage any animal to leave.
